Microneedling: An at Home How-to

January 22, 2017

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic treatment, using devices called derma rollers or micro needle rollers. These tiny needles are rolled across the skin. In doing this they create tiny punctures that naturally stimulate the body to create it won new layer of collagen.

The micro needles are as short as 0.5mm so not very invasive but can produce amazing results. A single session can create an increase in your body own natural collagen of up to 1,000% (1).

In addition microneedling can naturally increase the bodys absorption of beneficial anti ageing products through the skin. Some forms of micro needling can actually increase this by up to 10,000 times (2).

I addition microneedling can naturally increase the bodys absorption of beneficial anti ageing products through the skin.

The term “Holistic Microneedling” was first created by White Lotus Anti Aging to describe the process of performing derma rolling or skin needling in a more natural less invasive way.

Principals of holistic microneedling:

  1. Use the least invasive techniques possible – There are a couple of ways to make micro needling less invasive. Firstly use the shortest micro needles possible to achieve results. Research has shown that collagen induction only takes place up to 0.6mm into the skin and most of it more shallowly (1). For this reason a 0.5mm or 0.75mm roller is sufficient for nearly all treatments.
  2. Only use natural substances with the treatments. Micro needling increases the absorption of products through the skin as discussed above. This makes it vitally important that any creams or serums used with micro needling are safe, natural and preferably organic.
  3. Apply the principles of traditional medicine to improve rolling techniques, safety and results. Traditional medicine systems have a long history of effective use which has allowed them to survive into the modern world. By applying the best of these techniques we can perform micro needling painlessly and more effectively.

Holistic Microneedling can be used to assist scars and scarring, signs of facial aging, stretch marks (striae), cellulite and in some cases hair restoration.

It can be performed at home or in a clinic depending on your preferences.

How to perform a microneedling treatment at home:

  1. Find a supplier you can trust. micro needle devices must arrive sterile and in tamper evident packaging. Look for aftercare serums that are certified by recognised organisations like the organic soil association or Vegan Society.
  2. Make sure your products come with full instructions. Written instructions are the minimum and a DVD is even better.
  3. To use the roller normally you need to roll across each area of skin 15 times to achieve the same results as indicated in the research above (ie up to a 1,000% increase in collagen production). Treatments should be spaced 2 weeks apart to allow the skin time to regenerate.
  4. After the treatment with a 0.5mm roller the skin may appear red and slightly inflamed for up to 24 hours. During this time use the aftercare serum to soothe the skin and increase results.
  5. A final tip is to remember you cannot share your roller with anyone. They may look cute and colourful and the needles may often be too small to see but you still must treat them with respect.

Done correctly Holistic Microneedling can increase collagen dramatically with results continuing to improve for up to 6 months after treatment. New collagen once laid down will last for between 5-7 years.
