Getting back to basics and embracing what the ancients knew to be true seems to be more mainstream these days.
Supporting local farmers is becoming more common, growing our own herbs and veggies is becoming more popular, and wellbeing is as much a topic of conversation as is the weather. Have we used and abused this modern life so much that we’re now coming full circle to consider what really is important?
One such natural lifestyle choice that seems to popping up everywhere is earthing. A simple yet potent health-transforming global movement. But it’s nothing new.
Earthing means walking barefoot on the earth to receive in return a natural, nurturing and gentle electric energy. An energy that promotes health, vitality, lowers stress, relieves muscle tension and headaches, improves blood pressure, reduces inflammation and its associated pain, as well as stabilizing the body’s basic biological rhythms, promoting better sleep, and protecting the body against potentially health-disturbing environmental electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
Martin Zucker, co-author of Earthing – The most important health discovery ever? states that “the modern disconnect from this natural resource right under our feet may likely be a totally overlooked factor behind the alarming rise of chronic disease in recent decades, and inflammatory-related conditions in particular.”
Pretty impressive don’t you think? But like most things, the simple common-sense practices are those that bring about the most profound benefits.
Growing up on the beach, I think myself extremely fortunate to have been gifted that ability to connect with the earth on a daily basis, without even thinking twice about it. Whatever chance I got, I’d be bare foot, down at the beach, running on the sand and swimming in the ocean. If I had a headache or was in a bad mood, the one thing that I knew would make me feel better was a walk on the beach and swim in the surf. I had an inkling of an idea that the Earth was healing me, but more so from a spiritual point-of-view, because for me, nature is my “church” and that which brings me peace of mind. I hadn’t ever thought of the physiological gift that the Earth was offering. Just at the point when I didn’t think I could be any more grateful for the beautiful planet that we live upon, I learn about the phenomenon of earthing. How does it get any better than that? And what else is possible beautiful people?

Whether you live in the countryside, the desert, by the beach or in a big city, please take a moment in the day to bare your feet and connect with the Earth. And whilst you’re at it, what about asking what you can contribute to the Earth as well. What if the Earth requires energy from you?
I love to start my day with a barefoot walk in nature, but if you feel that you don’t have the time to do something like this, or live in a concrete jungle, please remember that all big cities have parks that you can visit. So, grab a takeaway salad, or better yet, bring in a home-made lunch, go for a walk to the nearest park, take your shoes off and enjoy a half-hour healing session with this beautiful Earth.
