If you’ve not yet raided your pantry to make your own beauty products, from masks and conditioners to scrubs and lotions, my mineralising face and body scrub is a great recipe to start with because it’s so dang simple! Plus it actually works.

When choosing any food ingredient to put on your skin, organic is always best if you can source it.

The Recipe

For the scrub, all you need is three ingredients: aluminium-free baking soda, wild kelp powder and water. That’s it. I also don’t worry too much about exact ratios. But for those who like to measure, use approximately two parts baking soda to one part wild kelp and mix together with a spoon until both ingredients are nicely combined together.

I pop this mixture into a sealed jar in my bathroom, and simply sprinkle a decent amount on the palm of my hand while showering. Then, add enough water to make a paste and apply gently over the entire face and body, being mindful to stay away from the delicate under eye areas. For those with sensitive skin, a lighter scrubbing motion is also a good idea, at least until you’ve got a feel for what’s best for your own skin.

I also like to leave the mixture on my skin for a good few minutes to let the wild kelp powder work its mineralising wonders.

Why it Works

Baking soda is a natural exfoliant that gently sloughs away dead skin cells and helps to free up clogged pores. Meanwhile, wild kelp powder has a natural detoxifying effect that contains certain acids, which have been shown to bind toxins, pulling them away from the skin. Add a little heat from a warm shower and the effect is magnified. Sea kelp also boasts minerals, Omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols, which leave the skin feeling soft and supple.

Once out of the shower, I like to moisturise with a good quality organic rose hip oil to further boost the skin with good fats.

Have you made the scrub and loved the outcome, or got another recipe that’s too good to keep a secret? Please share in the comments!
